    7 Tennis Elbow Home Remedies

    The frustrations of tennis elbow, and how to heal properly

    We have all been there at some point in time, and find ourselves on the side lines with an achy elbow unable to do even the simplest tasks. Lifting, pushing, and or merely waving can be painful endeavors that leave us frustrated. Tennis elbow comes from simple overuse of the tendons and surrounding muscles. Whatever has caused your tennis elbow, there are ways to find relief, and answers to your questions which I will talk about below.

    The common description of tennis elbow or “lateral epicondylitis” is a painful condition of the elbow caused by overuse. Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. The forearm muscles and tendons become damaged from overuse — repeating the same motions again and again. This leads to pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow. (Ortho Info, 1).

    …the keys to making sure you are back on the tennis court pain free is simple. You need to ice, rest, and let your arm heal properly before putting more strain onto the tendons and tissues.

    Symptoms:

    • Pain or burning on the outside of your elbow
    • Weak grip strength
    • Achy and stiff joints near the extensor tendons
    • Pain the in the wrist
    • Painful to shake hands

    Before you take a trip to the doctor here are some home remedies that will ease your pain:

    1. Sufficient Rest. Allow at least 6-12 weeks for the tissues and tendons to repair.
    2. Gentle massage.
    3. Ice (for 20 minutes three times a day at least). *Tip: Fill up a Dixie cup, and freeze overnight. Once completely frozen, use this cup to rub around the irritated area of the elbow.
    4. Anti-inflammatory Medication or over the counter pain relievers. (Aspirin, or Ibuprofen)
    5. Stretching Exercises: Stretch your arm out straight, and bring your hand up (like you will give someone a high-five). With your opposite hand grab your extended arms fingertips and pull back toward you. This will give your forearm a good stretch. Hold for at least 15 seconds. Once finished, place your arm out straight in front, palm down and gently pull the hand towards you. These are two great stretches for tennis elbow. (Sports Injury Clinic, 1).
    6. Wearing an arm brace: This can ease some of the tension on your arm, and be a nice tool to aiding a quicker recovery.
    7. Check your equipment: A stiffer tennis racket with tight strings can put unwanted tension on your arm causing a flare up. Try switching to a more flexible racket, with a looser string pattern to put ease on your arm while healing. The tennis professionals in your area can give you racket and string recommendations.

    If these remedies do not work for you, you will then want to see your doctor. They may conduct and MRI, X-Ray, or EMG (Nerve Compression) to see if anything more serious has happened to the tissues and tendons.

    The Pro’s of Home Remedies:

    • Non-surgical healing with quicker recovery time (No loss of strength, risk of infection, or loss of flexibility.)
    • Cost effective
    • Guidelines are easy to follow, and not as painful as surgery.

    The Con’s of Home Remedies:

    • The time it takes to properly heal tennis elbow can be extensive. (6-12 weeks).
    • Patience is key, and recovery is slow making one feel like the pain will never go away.
    • If rest is not taken seriously, the pain can become chronic.

    To wrap up, the keys to making sure you are back on the tennis court pain free is simple. You need to ice, rest, and let your arm heal properly before putting more strain onto the tendons and tissues. Once you have rested and taken a good look at the equipment you are using, you can get back onto the court in no time! Remember, pushing through tennis elbow will only make it worse. Rest is key!

    The term “Sciatica” is not a medical condition, but rather a symptom of underlying degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis.

Ji states from the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal that “90% of cases, sciatica is caused by a herniated disc with nerve-root compression.” (Ji, n.d.).The pain one can feel can range from mild to severe, with radiation of pain along the distribution of sciatic nerve in the leg. Numbness, tingling, and sharp pains with paresthesia and sensory dysfunction are some of the discomforts one may feel when dealing with this impingement. “Sciatica symptoms occur when the large sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed in the lumbar spine.

    …The ultimate goal of non-surgical treatment is to alleviate pain and rid your body of any neurological symptoms caused by the compression of the nerve root. There are many exercises that your physical therapist may recommend when battling with Sciatica.

    The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body and is composed of individual nerve roots that start by branching out from the spine in the lower back and combine to form the “sciatic nerve.” (Hochschuler, n.d.).

    There are millions that suffer with sciatica around the world, and it inhibits their way of life drastically, as small tasks such as sitting can be painful. A clinical study was done on 301 patients with Sciatica, by the International Musculoskeletal Medicine journal regarding “Hypothesis generation for targeted back pain treatment” and the results were informative. “The average duration of an episode of sickness, requiring absence from work due to sciatica was 16.9 days, whereas lumbago was shorter at 9.3 days.” (Sweetman, n.d.).When seeking non-surgical treatment, there are many practices you can do right from your home to help alleviate the pain that Sciatica causes. The pain is rarely on both sides of the body, but it is still important to incorporate the treatment on both, so that you are not throwing your body off balance.

    5 Tips for Alleviating Sciatic Pain:

    1. Heat and Ice: Based on what you prefer, start with heat or ice and apply to the affected area. Leave the heat or ice on for at least 20 minutes, and alternate every two hours. If you are using ice, do not directly apply to the skin, as it could cause ice burn, or frost bite. (Hochschuler, n.d.).
    2. Acupuncture: Keep in mind that acupuncture has not been shown by scientific studies to help sciatica, but it may work for you. (“Sciatic Pain Relief, n.d.).  “Since sciatica is a channel disorder, acupuncture of points removing channel obstruction and promoting qi and blood circulation is indicated in its treatment.” (Ji, n.d.).
    3. Massage: Massage can increase the blood flow in the body, and help the body heal itself. This can especially help if the area if affected by muscle spasms. A regular weekly massage may help the lower back region relax, and could create additional flexibility that is deeply affected by Sciatica. (Top 10 Home Remedies, 2014).
    4. Specific Stretches and Exercises: You will need to consult your doctor on what exercises are applicable to your case of Sciatica. A simple knee to chest stretch will help improve the flexibility in your lower back and decrease the tension on the sciatic nerve. Another harmless yet effective stretch is knee knocking. You lie flat on your back and slide your heels toward the buttock region. Your knees are up and you sway them left and right on each side of your body. (Top 10 Home Remedies, 2014). This too, opens up the lower back area and promotes flexibility.
    5. Valerian Root: Valerian root is a natural supplement that works as a relaxer, and alleviates chronic nerve pain. The supplement works best when taken three times a day at 150 mg per dose. However, everyone's tolerances and symptoms are different so consult your doctor before taking any supplements. (Top 10 Home Remedies, 2014).

    The ultimate goal of non-surgical treatment is to alleviate pain and rid your body of any neurological symptoms caused by the compression of the nerve root. There are many exercises that your physical therapist may recommend when battling with Sciatica. If none of the above remedies are working, there are creams, pain medications, epidural injections, and chiropractic treatments that would have to be recommended by your doctor before any surgeries would take place.

    Psoriasis is an unpredictable, and persistent skin condition that leaves patients in pain and searching for answers. Psoriasis is caused when skin cells multiply faster than normal. In an average individual, the length of cell cycle is anywhere between 21 – 28 days; however, in psoriasis, the cellular turnover is exceptionally high (the length of cycle is 2 to 6 days). The skin is essentially overproducing, causing raised red plaques, covered with white scales in the affected areas. The most common areas for psoriasis to happen are the knees, scalp, elbows, torso, palms, and soles of the feet. However, Psoriasis may appear anywhere in the body. (“Understanding Psoriasis”, n.d., para 1.) There is no cure for Psoriasis, but there are a multitude of home remedies that can alleviate the symptoms.

    …While there is not a cure out there for Psoriasis, there are many home remedies to help alleviate the daily pain Psoriasis causes.

    According to WebMD, “A variety of factors, ranging from emotional stress and trauma to streptococcal infection can cause an episode of psoriasis. Recent research indicates that some abnormality in the immune system is the key cause of psoriasis. As many as 80% of people having flare-ups report a recent emotional trauma, such as a new job or the death of a loved one.” (“Understanding Psoriasis”, n.d., para 3).

    At Home Remedies to Help Alleviate Psoriasis

    1. Hot and Cold Shower Relief: Many people with psoriasis find that a hot and cold-water bath or cold compresses relieves their itch. A lukewarm bath with Epsom salt, mineral oil, milk, or olive oil may soothe the itching and infiltrate scales and plaques. (Krans, 2015, para 6).
    2. Apple Cider Vinegar: Psoriasis lesions on your scalp can cause quite the irritation and itch. “To soothe, mix equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water. Dab the solution on your scalp two to three times a week. Rinse after a few minutes to keep your scalp from becoming irritated by the vinegar. One caution: Don't try this if the skin on your scalp is cracked or bleeding.”(Orenstein, 2014, para 5).
    3. Moisturize Everywhere: Keeping your skin hydrated is one of the key precautions you can take when trying to avoid flare ups and alleviate itch. Keeping the air hydrated with a humidifier will also help regain comfort during flare ups.
    4. Capsaicin: Capsaicin is the ingredient in chili peppers that makes them hot, and works by blocking the communication to the sensory nerves. “Researchers from the University Medical Center in Freiburg, Germany found, over the counter creams containing capsaicin may help reduce the pain, inflammation, redness and scaling associated with psoriasis.” (Herbs/Natural Remedies”, n.d. para 4).
    5. Turmeric: This herb has natural anti-inflammatory properties, as well as antioxidant properties. You can take turmeric in a pill form, sprinkle it on your food liberally, or take it in a supplement form. (Herbs/Natural Remedies”, n.d. para 8).
    6. Wrap and Moisturize: Carefully wrapping your skin up, after it has been moisturized will assure that the ointment will stay on for longer and better absorb. (Borelli, 2013, para 5).
    7. Fish Oil: Taking a fish oil supplement daily, will help reduce the flare ups associated with psoriasis. Because fish oils are high in omega-3 fatty acids, they naturally reduce inflammation in the body. (10-Do-It-Yourself, 2015, para 1).
    8. Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree plants are grown in Australia, and are known to have antiseptic properties. When applied, it is said to help remove dry dead skin cells. (10-Do-It-Yourself, 2015, para 10).

    While there is not a cure out there for Psoriasis, there are many home remedies to help alleviate the daily pain Psoriasis causes. Everyone’s skin reacts differently, so if the home remedies are not giving you relief, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist. Do not apply oils, or apple cider vinegar to any areas of the skin that are cracked and bleeding, as this will result in painful stinging and possible infection.
